WHAT EXACTLY IS TRADITIONAL ACUPUNCTURE?

You don't have to "believe" in it, this a tried and tested system of medicine!

Acupuncture is an holistic approach to the management of disease as well as a way of maintaining a healthy body and mind. The exact pattern and degree of disharmony is unique to each individual and using traditional acupuncture, will be treated as such with a personalised treatment plan.

HOW DOES IT WORK ?

According to Traditional Chinese Medicine, our health is dependent on the body's motivating energy - known as Qi - moving in a smooth and balanced way in relation to the body fluids, through a series of meridians (channels) beneath the skin.

The flow of energy (Qi) and fluids (blood & other body liquids) can be disturbed by emotional states such as anxiety, stress, anger, fear or grief, poor nutrition, weather conditions, hereditary factors, infection, toxins and trauma.

WHO HAS ACUPUNCTURE ?

Although often described as a means of pain relief, it is in fact used to treat people with a wide range of illnesses. Its focus is on improving the overall well-being of the patient, rather than the isolated treatment of specific symptoms.

Many people first come to acupuncture for help with anxiety states, arthritis, asthma, to overcome addictions, back pain, circulatory problems, depression, facial paralysis, fibrositis, high blood pressure, inderterminate aches and pains, infertility, menstrual problems, migraines, discomfort during pregnancy, rheumatism, sciatica, skin conditions or ulcers.

IS IT SAFE ?

Acupuncture is a safe treatment for all. As a fully qualified acupuncturist, I observe a Code of Safe Practice.

Acupuncture needles are much finer than those used in injections. They are solid rather than hollow.

When inserted, the sensation is often described as a tingling. A finger pressure technique is particularly suitable for children or people with a fear of needle.

MY FIRST CONSULTATION

You will be asked about your current symptoms, medical history, lifestyle -including your diet and digestion - sleeping patterns and emotional state.
Your pulse will be taken and the quality, rhythm and rate will indicate the functioning of your body's Qi, blood and, vital organs. Various points will be palpated.
This will enable me to assess the general state of your health and identify the underlying pattern of disharmony to give you the most effective treatment.

You will also be asked to show your tongue so that its colour and aspect can be noted.

We will then discuss the principle of the treatment. During this time, I will explain to you what is involved and together you will work out a treatment plan that is suited to your personal needs and that fits in with other commitments you may have.
Through this healing partnership, I can ensure that you are always personally involved in the healthcare that you receive and help you make the right choices for you to regain well-being.

HOW MANY TREATMENTS DO YOU NEED?

The number of visits required depends on the individual. Although sometimes the effects of the treatment are dramatic, and only one or two sessions are required, normally five visits are recommended.

I may supplement needle treatment with:

moxibustion, moxa is a smouldering herb (artemisia vulgaris) which is used to warm acupuncture points and encourage the body's energy to flow smoothly.

Cupping Therapy is excellent to clear toxins in the muscles or to treat severe respiratory disorders.

Acupressure Massage or tapping with a rounded probe are techniques particularly suitable for small children or for people with a fear of needles.

Other methods of stimulating acupuncture points include the use of electro-acupuncture; particularly adapted for chronic muscular pain.
